What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu literally means “finger pressure”.  Shiatsu is a therapeutic, hands-on body work technique.  The practitioner uses precise pressure applied mainly with the palms and with the thumbs (and sometimes elbows knees or feet) to hold and stretch parts of the body to re-align and re-balance the body systems and the connections between them.

Zen Shiatsu is a modern Japanese technique applied to the ancient Chinese body maps and medical theory.   Shiatsu connects with the pathways of subtle energy in the body which are called Meridians.  This energy is called Chi in Chinese and Ki in Japanese.

Illness and discomfort or dis-ease are seen as an imbalance on the flow of Ki in the body.

What to Expect?

Shiatsu can be at once subtle and powerful, profoundly relaxing and envigorating.  You will notice the effects of your treatment for a few days afterwards as your system gradually rebalances itself.

Shiatsu takes place on a futon on the floor, if you would prefer not to lie down it is possible to do table treatments.  It is advisable to wear loose or comfortable clothing for your treatmen

Shiatsu during pregnancy.

It is safe and nice to receive shiatsu if you are pregnant, be sure to let me know if you are in your first trimester.

Areas of Experience

I hold a full and current DBS check.

Pregnancy Shiatsu:

I have plenty of experience working with pregnant ladies, it can be very relaxing and soothing to receive Shiatsu whilst pregnant.  It can also be a good treatment to address some of the unexpected symptoms that occur for pregnant ladies both emotionally and physically.  I trained with Susan Yates in Shiatsu for Birthing.  This is Shiatsu especially designed to prepare the mother and/or the couple for the experience of giving birth.  Contact me if you would like to arrange to do some couple’s sessions so that you and your birthing partner can get prepared for giving birth / supporting birth.

Neuro-divergence

I have considerable experience working with children and adults with various Learning Differences, on the Autistic Spectrum or who have Cerebral-Palsy, Down’s syndrome, Epilepsy, ADHD, ADD etc.  I welcome working with children and adults who may have been classified as such.  If this is you will require a more in-depth initial consultation / I may need to adapt the treatment to suit you and so you will need a longer appointment time for the first treatment.

Wheel-Chair users, and other physical disabilities.

I have worked with children, young people and adults who have physical disabilities and use wheelchairs both in and out of the therapeutic setting.  So I have an awareness of some of the physical challenges which can arise or develop out of putting extra pressure on certain limbs joints etc.  If this is you will require a more in-depth initial consultation / I may need to adapt the treatment to suit you and so you will need a longer appointment time for the first treatment.

PTSD:

The experience of PTSD can be both debilitating and leave you feeling misunderstood and desperate.  I have been lucky enough to work through this condition both personally and professionally.  Through Shiatsu I have successfully guided people out of the quagmire onto clearer pastures and self-empowering new directions.  Please see my website for more information.

Other mental health conditions:

I have worked with insomnia, depression, anxiety, bi-polar, schizophrenia etc. Please contact me personally to discuss your symptoms and book a treatment.
